The holiday season is fast approaching, and this is the time of the year when even the strong may not survive the temptation to overindulge. It’s almost impossible to avoid the decadence that creates a spectacular holiday spread. This week, we’re going to talk about how to get through the holiday season without trying every cookie, candy, cheese tray, and cocktail.

Don’t attend a party starving

Holiday parties are usually filled with appetizers, drinks, cheese trays, and plates of desserts. If you end up going hungry, and dinner isn’t served for another hour, you may get weak in the knees to fill your empty stomach. Eating a small meal beforehand will help you avoid filling up on snacks before the main event and will stop you from overeating if and when a meal is served.

Hydrate

Drinking water can help control food intake, and your body needs water to function properly. Foods that contain a high water content, like fruits and vegetables, keep you fuller longer because the body absorbs those foods slower.

Stash healthy snacks

Unfortunately, most parties are full of processed foods that don’t contain the nutrients your body needs. If you know you can’t resist the treats, then pack a bag of nuts, raw cut veggies, fruit, or dark chocolate to give you the nutritional boost you need to curb the cravings for the salty chips and fatty dips.

Drink smart

I don’t expect you to completely avoid alcohol during the holidays (I mean, come on), but if you drink smarter, you won’t regret your choices in the morning. Drink a glass of water with every cocktail, taking sips of water in between drinks. Avoid the sugary mixed beverages and keep it light, using soda water and a lemon, or drink it neat.

Keep it fitted

Maybe you’ve joked about wearing sweatpants to Thanksgiving so you can eat more. If you attend a holiday party, look your best in fitted clothes. You’ll look amazing, but you’ll also avoid overeating because you won’t want the discomfort that comes with a full, bloated belly.

Take your time

Mindlessly stuffing your face is easy when you’re multitasking. If you’re hosting or talking to as many people as you can it’s easy to overeat. Take the time to take a break and enjoy your food, chewing slowly and allowing yourself time to savor.

Indulge

Okay, so I know the whole point of this is how not to overindulge, but trust me here. By indulging just a little, you won’t feel deprived. Enjoying one sweet treat won’t get you off track completely, and it will help you avoid a binge.

It is the holiday season so it’s okay to treat yourself…in moderation! Don’t feel guilty over one drink or cookie. If you feel like you went too far, reset the next day and get back on track.

Next Sunday, we’ll talk about how to avoid the bloat and what to do if it still happens.
