With the holidays behind us and a new year just beginning, it’s time to reassess our health and fitness goals and how we view them. This week, we’re going to talk about staying on track with your healthy lifestyle in the new year.

First of all, you’ll want to rethink those 2019 resolutions. Resolutions tend to be all-or-nothing and focus on fixing negatives rather than building on strengths and looking at the bigger picture. Think of your resolutions this year and in the past. Were they about building on what you’re doing well at? Or, were they able stopping “bad” behaviors?

Instead of making resolutions, set goals that are changes to your lifestyle. Roughly 92% of people don’t follow through with the resolutions they set because they don’t look at it from a goal perspective and they get discouraged.

By creating short, medium, and long-term SMART goals (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-specific), we are able to better determine what success looks like, while sticking to a concrete plan. Be sure to write down your goals, and share them with others, because this makes you more likely to accomplish your goals because it adds an additional layer of accountability.

Along with sharing your goals, find a friend or family member to help one another stay on the straight and narrow. This could include having a workout partner or challenging a friend to see who can burn the highest calories, attend the most boot camps, cook the most new recipes, or any other competition that excites you.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to setting practical goals that are not only playing on your strengths and that fit into the big picture

Next Sunday, we’ll talk about why lifestyle changes are the most sustainable way to make a big difference in your health.
