June 13, 2021: Fair Food

My weekly Get Your Stuff Together Sunday email series gives you one actionable focus for the week that will make your life a little easier.

When going to things like fairs and festivals, there are tempting fried and sugary treats everywhere. This week, we’re going to talk about how you can have fun without completely blowing your nutrition plan.

Summer is full of fun activities, and many of them are centered around food. Staying on track with your healthy eating can be a little tricky during these months, but not impossible by any means!

I have 3 quick strategies for continuing to eat healthy while enjoying summer and all that it has to offer!

Plan Ahead

Failing to plan, is planning to fail. Planning takes a bit more effort before you head out, but the benefits far exceed the extra effort. Plan to have healthy snacks available. Plan to eat ahead of time if you are unsure of your options at any given event. Plan to bring a healthy entree or vegetable with you. Plan to have a cooler with healthy options like protein, vegetables, and fruit. Or, plan to eat something fun that you’ve been looking forward to and enjoy it.

Protein First

Prioritizing protein first is important, as protein is satiating and will help to keep you full and satisfied. This also helps to curb any sugar or carbohydrate cravings. The good news is, you can usually always find a protein option...think turkey legs. Our local fair always has pork BBQ, kabobs, and chicken, too!

Be Intentional

If you are going to have a dessert or cocktail, then be intentional about it. Choose something that is special and truly tastes AMAZING! If it doesn’t taste amazing, then choose not to finish it. Be picky and make a conscious choice about indulgences. Treats should be special and exciting.
