One of the most popular nutrition questions I get is “When is the best time to start my new eating plan?” Although the answer can be very simple (anytime is a great time), there may be some science showing a certain day is better than any other. This week, we’re going to talk about the science-backed best day for starting a new eating plan.
What day is that?
It’s Monday.
Why Monday, out of all the days in the week?
Because Monday is considered a “temporal landmark,” and is the day people have more energy, drive, and motivation to take on a new task—like changing their eating.
According to researchers, Monday tends to be a “reset” day— a day where someone can start off fresh and new with their eating and exercise patterns. The surge in energy when you start off a new week may make it easier to make healthy changes and tackle a new lifestyle change.
But, Mondays do have a drawback as well. You may have more energy earlier in the week, as opposed to the end of the week, when stress and obligations may tax your energy. This may lead to more burnout, which could make falling off the wagon an easier choice.
In my opinion, however, any day of the week is a great day to get started on a new habit, including one that has to do with nutrition. As I see it, each morning is the start of a new day. And with each new day, you have the chance to make healthy choices, or keep on doing the same thing you’re currently doing.
The best part: If you happen to fail one day, or have one bad meal, it’s not the end of the world. In fact, it’s simply a bump in the road.
Instead of letting it ruin your day, you can choose to pick yourself back up, and get back to making the right changes to get you closer to your goal.
If you’re looking for the right day, the right time, or the right situation to start a diet, it won’t happen. There will always be something that comes up that will derail your plan.
Some people need a specific day to start their new habits, and that is perfectly okay. If you need that direction, then Monday is the day to go. But, remember, each day is a chance to start over and do something right with your healthy lifestyle. And that could be the best direction to go in when trying to improve your health.
Next Sunday, we’ll talk about some things to consider when hiring a personal trainer.
